What to look for in a Photographer?
Sidebar content

Modern day photographers are everywhere on the internet, no doubt I am one of several you just ‘googled’? Like anything in life there are good ones…and bad ones. There is a big difference between a photographer and a ‘picture taker’ A few questions you should always ask...

  • Do they offer a contract? Not only does it offer the photographer protection, but you as well. Some people are happy with a verbal agreement, but a paper contract is a must.
  • Do they hold full public liability insurance? Another big tell tale difference between a professional photographer and ‘a person with a camera’.
  • Equipment. Does the photographer carry duplicates (backup) cameras, flashguns etc? Any photographer without backup equipment is a liability.
  • Do you feel comfortable with him/her? A photographer will be a big part of your wedding planning and the day itself, so make sure your happy to have your photographer as 'part of the team'.

Taber Photography did a simply amazing job of rescuing a tatty image of my grandparents turning it into a beautiful A4 print, which made a unique golden wedding present.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is your style of photography?

A. Reportage / Documentary photography is ‘real life’ capture of your day. It involves the photographer being discreet and capturing moments and emotions that aren't posed. I try and use this style 80% but I am also fond of some posed ‘classic’ shots. Again this is up to you and will be discussed long before the day itself.

Q. How many photographs do you take?

A. How long is a piece of string? Images can easily run to 2000, or more. After editing this does reduce to 200 or 300. Also I may take several images in quick succession and combine them afterwards using specialist software. The ‘everyone group shot’ is a prime example. Taking a single photograph of 100 people you are very unlikely to capture everyone looking their best. I can take several shots and combine all the best faces to get a great group shot. Another advantage of using the latest digital technology.

Q. How long are you available for?

A. I only commit to one wedding on a given day so for as long as required. Usually a wedding day is a long day for everyone including the photographer. But if you only require part of the day to be covered that’s not a problem.

Q. Do you travel outside East Anglia?

A. I do. I am happy to cover anywhere in the uk or abroad.

Q. Do we meet before the big day?

A. Definitely! To turn up on the day not knowing each other would be very uncomfortable. Like the vicar / wedding planner / dress maker, I like to be ‘part of the process.’ I usually plan to meet two or three times before the wedding day. Part of my service is a meeting at the venue which includes a very informal pre wedding shoot... kind of a dry run.

Q. Film or digital?

A. I am one of the new generation that ‘started digital.’ There is a lot of nostalgia attached to film photography and only a couple of years ago it was debatable if digital was able to match film. But the latest digital equipment 'out guns' film in every way and keeps on getting better. It's faster, less messy, cheaper and gives better results.

Q. Can you provide colour and black and white?

A. Yes…and more! Software gives the option for almost infinite effects to be added after the capture of an image.

Q. Do you also do old fashioned posed shots?

A. Yes. My style is weighted more towards candid reportage photography but formal shots can be fun too. The balance of formal to candid shots is something that can be discussed.

Q. How will I view the photos taken?

A. I will meet you again a few weeks after the wedding (usually after your honeymoon) with a slideshow of images on DVD. These can be viewed on a television or computer.

Q. Can our friends and family buy copies of photographs from you?

A. Yes. All weddings receive an ‘online proofing page’ on this website. Simply type in the code unique to your day and any guest of your wedding can view the images as a slideshow or purchase the images online.

Q. Where do we go from here?

A. Either contact me on this form or e mail me at info@taberphotography.co.uk
